Quick Facts
The simplistic beauty of the architecture, relaxed atmosphere and spectacular views replace the amenities of a 5 star lodge. The El Portillén experience equates to renting a remote mountain lodge for a long weekend with your closest fishing buddies. Here you will enjoy a friendly kitchen and housekeeping staff, delicious Argentine cuisine, our select wines and our talented team of fishing guides.
El Portillén holds 8 anglers in 4 double rooms with private bathrooms and vast views of the verdant countryside. Dramatic panoramic views of the Andean foothills are enjoyed from every room on the main floor. The intimate experience of El Portillén is embodied by having the kitchen and dining room as one large space, allowing close interaction between guests and staff. Our guests are welcome to hang out in the kitchen just as they would at a friend’s house.
Adjacent to the lodge is a large quincho specifically designed to enjoy feasts of barbequed lamb, pork and beef. Like the lodge, the quincho also is lined with celling-to-floor windows for panoramic viewing of Patagonia’s geography.
El Portillén offers excellent dry fly fishing on a variety of small trout streams. Most of our fishing is done on foot, scanning the river for rising fish or blind casting into pockets and runs. Full or half day floats on the Quillén and Aluminé Rivers round out the fishing experience at El Portillén. Our home waters are on the Quillén where we fish over 8 miles of this quiet, picturesque stream. The river is small enough to cast across, large enough to float and supports surprisingly large Rainbows and Brown Trout that feed almost exclusively on the abundant aquatic insects.

Limay River
The Limay is one of the largest rivers in Patagonia and drains the Nahuel Huapi Lake in Bariloche. It flows northeast toward the city of Neuquén and creates a natural border between the provinces of Rio Negro and Neuquén. With it’s crystal clear waters, picturesque views and large quantity of huge fish, the Limay is one of the most renowned rivers in Patagonia – We have exclusive access to the best 8 miles to the river!!
Manso River -See our note on the Manso on page 128 of Fly Fishing the Best Rivers of Patagonia, Argentina Photoagraphy by Francisco Bedeschi, South End Publishing, 2005. The Manso River is located 45 minutes south of Bariloche within the Nahuel Huapi National Park. It’s crystal clear, emerald waters that run through lush forests and around roughed mountains make it one of the most picturesque rivers in all of Patagonia. We float and wade different sections of the river using 5-6 weight rods with both wet and dry flies. The average size rainbow and brown trout in the Manso River is 17-18 inches with most anglers landing 15-20 fish per day. These trout are remarkably strong and brilliantly colored. However, catching these beauties can be a challenge in such clear water conditions; fine tippets and well presented flies are the key.
At Fly Fishing Patagonia, we create custom-tailored fishing packages that usually incorporate rivers and lodges in Bariloche, San Martin and Junin. This means that your Argentina Fly fishing itinerary will be unique. It allows our guests to experience a great deal more of Patagonia’s environment, trout waters and culture than if they were to book a week at just one lodge. To give you an idea, below is a samples of Patagonia fishing trips and lodge combinations.

Experience the new El Portillén Lodge, a convenient alternative to costly fishing lodges in Patagonia, Argentina. El Portillén is a beautiful log home built in the Andean foothills on the Quillén River with easy access to 5 different rivers. Located half way between Lake Quillén and the confluence of the Aluminé River, the lodge sits on the north bank of the Quillén River inside a 8650 acre private estate. This corner of remote northern Patagonia sees fewer anglers and is a dry fly paradise for anglers who prefer fishing intimate mountain streams.
