El Portillén offers excellent dry fly fishing on a variety of small trout streams. Most of our fishing is done on foot, scanning the river for rising fish or blind casting into pockets and runs. Full or half day floats on the Quillén and Aluminé Rivers round out the fishing experience at El Portillén.
Rio Quillén: Our home waters are on the Quillén where we fish over 8 miles of this quiet, picturesque stream. The river is small enough to cast across, large enough to float and supports surprisingly large Rainbows and Brown Trout that feed almost exclusively on the abundant aquatic insects.
Rio Malalco: Only 20 minutes from the lodge, this small tributary to the Quillén is paradise for the angler looking to walk and wade a beauty creek with a 4 weight rod, casting small dries to rising fish. Here, you are more likely to see an Andean Condor then a footprint.
The Calquifitra: Although a freestone river, the Calquifitra is has all the character of a spring creek with its low, grassy banks and a light colored riverbed made of aquatic vegetation, sand and fine gravel. The slow, shallow waters and insect life make spotting fish easy, yet delicate presentation and light tippets are needed for success.
Rio Pulmarí: The picturesque Pulmarí resembles a New Zealand high mountain stream. In the narrow, upper reaches, it’s gin clear waters flow over a riverbed of scattered boulders while the middle and lower stretches the river widens to 10-25 yards with a more even river bottom. A variety of trees surround the verdant river corridor. Rainbows and Browns average 16-18 inches and key in on aquatic insects, especially in the riffles and runs between deep pools.
The Aluminé River: The large Aluminé River is where our guests can enjoy a full day float and target even larger fish on the surface. The 35 kilometer stretch between Rahue and Pilo Lil offers wide, easily waded runs to swing streamers or float nymphs and the willow lined banks and pockets along rock walls beg for twitching hopper.
After an easy overnight flight, anglers will land at the Buenos Aires Ezieza International Airport, transfer 45mins to the Jorge Newbery Domestic Airport and fly two hours south to Patagonia. Anglers staying at Portillén are typically picked up at the San Martin Airport and driven 45 minutes to the lodge. The Bariloche Airport is 3.5 hours away but is a good alternative.
